(whisperDISPATCH) - Mike Nifong is seemingly the District Attorney from hell for an innocent defendant. Second only to Tom Sneddon in CA, that is.
Well now {tag Mike Nifong} is off the job after opting to voluntarily {tag resign} his post as District Attorney instead of waiting to be completely stripped of everything by the North Carolina State Bar. Nifong's own attorney admits the former D.A. made "multiple, egregious mistakes" while going after three former Duke LaCrosse players for an alleged rape which probably never happened.
Nifong admitted during his teary testimony that his presence as D.A. was not in the best interest of justice anymore. No arguments here.
"It has become increasingly apparent, during the course of this week, in some ways that it might not have been before, that my presence as the district attorney in Durham is not furthering the cause of justice"

Among other things, Nifong is accused of withholding DNA evidence from the defense that would later clear their clients of rape.
After the Attorney General's office took over the Duke case, the former {tag Duke} {tag Lacrosse} players were exonerated after an independent investigation.
Disciplinary Chairman F. Lane Williamson was in disbelief that DNA test results in a {tag rape} case could be held from the defense mistakenly, and noticed pattern of {tag misconduct}.
"How can you possibly explain that away? ...It wasn't just one little oversight. This was conduct over an extended period in a very high profile case," Williamson is quoted as saying.
Nifong could have his license to practice law yanked. Some commentators are publicly calling for him to be prosecuted as well.
The {tag disgrace}d D.A. is currently awaiting the decision from the disciplinary committee in North Carolina.
