The Alaskan Independence Party is anything but a "Country First" organization. The party promotes the secession of Alaska from the United States. In other words, they don't want to be under the thumb of the federal government (like everyone else) and want to separate themselves. As I mentioned in a previous opinion piece, secession is what the southern states did in the 1800s because they didn't want northerners telling them how to treat their slaves. This helped to spur the Civil War. While there is no paper trail that Palin was a full-fledged member of the party, co-chair of the party Dexter Clark was caught on video last year confirming Palin's membership. Her husband Todd Palin was reported to be a member of this party up until 2002.
At the AIP's website, right at the top before the main text is the hateful statement from Joe Vogler, founder of the separatist party saying: "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
Palin says the AIP plays an "important part" in Alaska's politics. The VP nominee also says part of her administration's focus matches at least one goal of the AIP. In the video, Palin says her administration is focused on "reigning in government growth so individual liberty and opportunity can expand. I know you agree with that."
