Chafee dropped the Republican label last year and now actually supports the Democratic nominee Senator Barak Obama.
He says the selection of Palin helped energize the Democratic base especially after Palin's speech in which, critics charge, the Republican VP nominee appeared smug and condescending.
Chafee was asked to comment on how Palin energized the Republican party's base.
As Roll Call's 'Heard on the Hill' reports:
Chafee thinks the Alaska governor also energized the left, as Democrats were outraged "to see this cocky wacko up there."

Many people were flooding his office with calls and emails after Palin's speech according to the AP. He says, "People were coming into my office, phone calls were flooding in, e-mails were coming in, 'I just sent money to Obama, I couldn't sleep last night' — from the left."
Chafee is currently helping to organize Republicans who support Barak Obama for president. He has written a new book entitled "Against the Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President".
The former Republican was interviewed by New America Foundation's Steve Clemons recently where he said of Palin, "she is dangerous for the future of this country."
"It's not okay to be dishonest," Chafee told Clemons in reference to all the promises George Bush made to the American public when running for president. Chafee says he hoped Bush's presidency would be like his father's presidency.
See video of the Clemons interview below:
Chafee also told Clemons rebuilding trust and listening to those country's leaders who are in the middle East are two key components in the U.S. being able to deal with the rest of the world
